Pantelleria Project

Volunteering Info

The season dates for 2023: 25 May to 21 June.

Team Members

Volunteer students will gain training in stratigraphic excavation, recording skills such as drawing, and finds processing. Students will be expected to work for 5.5 days per week. A typical work day involves going to the site at 7am, having a snack break mid-morning with cookies and fruit, breaking for lunch at the site house or the nearby cafe, returning to site, and doing pottery washing in the late afternoon.

Transportation

In past years, the team found it easiest to fly to Rome Fiumicino and then fly to Trapani or Palermo in Sicily, followed by a flight to Pantelleria Airport (PNL). One of our pre-season online organizational meetings will involve discussing this in greater detail. Students often pair up to travel together.

Accommodation and Meals Fra Mare e Lago

The team will stay at a hotel in Pantelleria town and will be driven to and from the Lago di Venere site on work days. Breakfast will be provided at the hotel; lunch will be eaten at the site house or a nearby cafe according to a schedule; many dinners will be taken independently in town with a couple of group dinners per week.

Pantelleria TownP1000150

This is the largest town on the island, offering restaurants, cafes, and gelato shops. Walking along the esplanade is a pleasant stroll.
